Workshop - Reading the Bible aloud 3 - 4 hours

1 focus Bible passage
(can be offered as a shorter workshop - 30 - 90 minutes)

'From my heart to yours' is a process for preparing a Bible passage for reading aloud with a gathered community, developed from my years of practice. Participants will be introduced to this process, in two parts - discovering meaning in the text, and communicating meaning. The process incorporates tools for interpreting the text - close reading, using commentaries and biblical dictionaries - and for public speaking - breathing, diction, expression, pace, etc.

This workshop is designed for larger groups and is suitable for beginners and experienced readers alike.

Biblical storytelling : Matthew's story of Jesus' birth

Master class in reading the bible aloud

90 mins
5 participants
1 Bible passage

Participants each read the same Biblical portion aloud, and receive feedback from the group.
By hearing feedback on our own reading, we are invited to reflect on our process of preparation, and our delivery.
By listening to others read and asking questions and offering comments, we will encourage each other and learn from each other.

This master class is designed to enrich the way we discover and communicate meaning in the Biblical stories, enriching the proclaiming of the Word of God in our communities.

Introduction to Biblical storytelling

90 mins / ½ day (4 hrs) / full day (6 hrs)
1 focus Bible passage, 3 exemplar passages

Biblical storytelling involves a process of internalising the Biblical portion in order to speak it from the heart for a gathered ‘audience’.
An introductory (90 mins) workshop will introduce the techniques and processes storytellers use.
A half day workshop will invite the participants to ‘have a go’ with a short passage.
A full day workshop will include a master class in reading aloud, to build on techniques of expression and delivery.
